Coastal Path Works
We were all pleased to see the completion of the Coastal path at the end of May 2018.  It is clear that the number of users has increased; a figure of 1000 visitors/week was mentioned! Anecdotally there is more traffic as we all enjoy our summer in Kingston Park.

There was a  legal challenge on the original approval for the coast path by a senior Kaurna Elder which prevented any further works on the coast path or the master plan for over 10 months. As a result the momentum achieved following our Public Forum in May 2018 had been lost.

This matter has now been resolved and we have
written to council on the communities behalf to encourage re-commencement of activities towards completion of the coast path reinstatement works and progress on the master plan. Here is the reply
The response included some key positive outcomes:
  • The council will conduct a review of the master plan following feedback via our May 2018 Forum see here
  • The fencing and barriers for the car park will be reinstated to protect the sensitive landscape and improve the amenity
Some ongoing unresolved aspects
  • The development of a comprehensive Kaurna heritage review and protocols is complete
  • The issue of car parking management remains unresolved, although if the barriers are reinstated the current unauthorized overflow parking will be removed. and the pressure will increase.see here
  • The temporary kiosk lease will not be automatically renewed and the council will put the temporary kiosk out to tender in January 2019.They have asked the 5049 CC to provide input into what sort of facility the community would like. The main issue is it needs to be a full time temporary facility not a pop up and improve the setting.see here
  • Council have granted permits for pop up food trucks to operate at the reserve. A fish and chip van appeared in the car park recently. We are seeking clarification from Council on the arrangements regarding protection/support for the full time temporary Cafe and the added pressure on car parking?
  • Reinstatement of plantings and grassed areas is ongoing.

The 5049 CC has continued to liaise with Council on the short term and long term solutions for the balance of the reserve whilst the Master Plan is developed.

It is a slow and frustrating process so if you have any ideas or suggestions you want to share?
