5049 Coastal Community Nature Celebration Event - A Great Success

On 28 September 2020 our local community came together to celebrate our local environment as part of the inaugural SA Nature Festival. Through an online (zoom) event, 6 local speakers shared their stories and connections to some of the special natural places in our area.

Listening to the various speakers reinforced the importance of spending time in nature, and the joy and reward that volunteering and being so deeply connected to these places can bring. There are so many local ways to get involved.

If you want to learn more about these places or are thinking about volunteering, here are some useful links to get you started:

Holdfast Habitat Heroes (City of Holdfast Bay volunteers) Email Alex Gaut to find out more agaut@holdfast.sa.gov.au
Hooded Plovers (BirdLife Australia volunteers) Find out more at https://beachvol.birdlife.org.au/login/index.php
Friends of Pine Gully – monthly working bees and morning tea – contact Kinda to find out more (kinda.snyder@gmail.com)
Friends of Marino Conservation Park - https://communitywebs.org/friendsmarinocp/
Friends of Glenthorne National Park - www.friendsofglenthorne.org.au

And we love these local guides to help you discover more of our local environment and get inspired with different ways to connect with our local environment:

Down By the Sea – a local nature guide for Holdfast Bay – down load the e-book or pick up a printed copy from City of Holdfast Bay. This weblink also provides links to some great nature ID charts – birds, beachcombing, butterflies and creating wildlife friendly gardens. https://www.holdfast.sa.gov.au/discover-our-place/things-to-do/down-by-the-sea

Nature Play SA (ideas to get everyone outside and connecting more closely with nature) – www.natureplaysa.org.au

A big thank you to:

Mary Houlahan from the Holdfast Habitat Heroes (City of Holdfast Bay volunteers) who have been working hard for a long time now to improve our sand dune environment

Ligita Bligzna the volunteer regional coordinator for BirdLife Australia monitoring and protecting the precious Hooded Plovers on our beaches.

Jason Tindell a local resident and General Manager at Nature Play SA – a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to getting children outside and engaged in nature who spoke about the importance and benefits of connecting with nature.

Kinda Snyder from Friends of Pine Gully – bringing community together and improving the natural environment in Pine Gully

Alan Wilson from Friends of Marino Conservation Park – a very special environment on the hill overlooking our coast.

Martin Schumacher from Friends of Glenthorne National Park – our newest national park and an amazing opportunity right on our doorstep.
If you missed the event, 4 of the short presentations have been recorded and can be viewed on the 5049 Coastal Community YouTube channel.
