Meet The COUNCIL Candidates Forum

6/10/2018

October 3 2018
What a great turn out for the “Meet the Candidates” event on Wednesday 3rd October. A huge thank you to all those that came along (80 + people), including Mayoral candidates for Holdfast Bay and Marion, Ward Councillor candidates from Seacliff Ward (Holdfast Bay) and Coastal Ward (Marion) and loads of 5049 community members.

A particular vote of thanks to committee members Ric Bierbaum for his leadership on setting up and running this Forum ; as well as managing the complex protocols to maintain an equitable process; and Emma Sandery for her sterling support.

The "speed dating" sessions provided lots of opportunity to chat with our local candidates and raise local issues.  Along with general inquiries about candidate’s policies, the following topics were brought up by the community on the night.
  • High density living impacts regarding changes to planning rules
  • Cement Hill development and the appearance of Schofield Road
  • Future plans for Marino Community Hall
  • Future plans for McConnell Reserve Marino
  • Permanent Café for Kingston Park Reserve
  • Car parking at Kingston Park foreshore
  • Masterplan for Kingston Park Reserve Tjilbruke Spring
  • Marino Conservation park dump remediation
  • Rates and rate caps
  • Beach Bars and use of common land for commercial purposes
  • Support for environmental regeneration of coastal reserves with volunteers
  • Dealing with small thing well e.g. rubbish and maintenance
  • Traffic management Brighton and Marion Road
  • Residents dis-empowerment from development approval process
  • Street trees for Seacliff narrow streets
  • Train service reduction
  • Cat curfew
  • Storm-water management and capture
  • Kingston House upgrade

Thanks also to the volunteers who helped out on the night to keep things running smoothly and for capturing the key issues of concerns to our community.
