Pine gully friends of The Crossing
Political BBQ- Sunday 6 August.
Marino Residents Association Committee member, Kinda Tabba-Snyder has done a magnificent job in organising a petition against the closure of the Pine Ave pedestrian rail crossing, culminating in kindly hosting a meeting/barbecue/proposed Gully working bee at her home on a very wintery Sunday 6 August.
Supported by local MP David Speirs, shadow Minister for Transport David Pisoni was guest of honour.
Approximately 20 local residents braved the weather to attend as did Rajiv Mouveri, Assets Manager for the City of Holdfast Bay.
Kinda 's professional presentation highlighted the inconvenience , & disconnect of the community if the crossing is closed, noting over 200 people had signed the petition.
Rajiv advised that the Council 's aim was to connect , not disconnect the community, and that local Councillor Susan Lonie had moved a motion to that effect, with the Council advising DPTI that they wished Pine Gully & all crossings remain open. He implored both MPs to use as much influence as possible with the relevant Minister & DPTI in this regard.
David Pisoni acknowledged the reason for the petition , and David Speirs advised the number of residents who had contacted him on the matter, the number of residents on the other side of Brighton Rd he'd encountered who use the crossing on route to the Coast, and the lack of danger in crossing the line as opposed to crossing busy Brighton Rd! He supports keeping the crossing open, with a variety of safety features if really deemed necessary .
Most people's view that the safety issue was incongruous, was highlighted by a resident of 65 years , advising that there have only been 2 accidents in that period of time, both on the Maitland Tce crossing, not Pine Gully, one being an attempt to beat the lowering boom gates, the other being local resident Mr X, hitting the side of a stream train!
